Vashishtha later lessened the effects of his curse by permitting all Ashtavsus except Prabhasa to exit the mortal realm after a year. The river goddess Ganga vowed to assist Ashtavasus. She married King Shantanu on the condition that he never spoke anything negative about her.
Goddess Ganga drowned her seven children, who were the seven Ashtavasus, in the river. When Shantanu’s eighth kid was born, he couldn’t take it any longer and confronted his wife, who promptly left him, reminding him of his vow. Prabhasa, the eighth son, was given the name Devarata, which he later changed to Bhishma.
